(Cedar Rapids – KCRG)—In the rush to get out of the path of Katrina, many people left their pets behind.

So, two Eastern Iowa women decided to do something to help.

It didn’t look good for Percy the dog until Cindy Barnett and Tammie Grimm drove down in a mini-van to rescue him and twelve other dogs.

“I think they got inside this van and felt like it was safe and quiet for the first time. No commotion. They just collapsed and slept,” Barnett said.

It took fourteen hours to drive the dogs from Mississippi back to Tipton.

The women passed the time by giving each dog a name.

“You can’t just get ‘em all out and say, ‘Here, puppy.’ We wanted to make sure they all had a name,” Grimm said.
