130 stray dogs, and still counting …

WIDOW Kang Gaik Kee, who made headlines years ago for spending her savings on her 80 beloved dogs in Penang, just cannot stop picking up more strays.

When she comes across abused, sick or abandoned dogs, she cannot find it in her heart to turn the animal away.

She treats the dogs like her “children” who respond to her love, care and gentleness.

Today, she has over 130 strays at their new home in a 0.8ha ram-butan orchard in Kamunting, near Taiping, Perak, which was given to her by a Samaritan.

However Kang, 64, feels increa-singly frustrated and worried with age catching up.

“Although I need dog food and money to feed my dogs, more than anything I hope to have someone, like a volunteer, to help me here at least once a week.

“I know it’s a lot to ask for. But if I die, I don’t know if there is anyone who can continue my work,” she said.

Feeding, bathing and caring for her dogs from morning to midnight is a labour of love which Kang has to do alone.

Her sacrifice began over 20 years ago when her husband died and she had no children to care for.

To ease her loneliness, she began collecting stray dogs, spending about RM50,000 of her EPF money to provide them shelter.

“I’m very grateful to people who have come forward and help al-though the economy is not very good right now,” she said.

She added that she was especially grateful to two people in Kuala Lumpur and another two in Penang who provided her with dog food and other supplies.

However, the widow still faces difficulties in making ends meet be-cause she usually needs to spend about RM200 daily to feed the animals.

To help raise funds for Kang, the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) is orga-nising a charity dinner at the Tow Boo Keong Temple hall in Ipoh on Oct 30.

Society vice-president Dr Goh Hue Lang said the proceeds would go towards the upkeep of the Kang’s shelter and the ISPCA shelter in Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah at Jalan Gopeng.

She said those who wished to do-nate should cross their cheques and bank drafts and make them paya-ble to ‘ISPCA’ with their name, add-ress and contact number written on the back.

For details about the dinner, call Doreen at 016-5608905 or Dr Goh at 05-5455933. Kang can be contacted at 012-5549716.

K9 Trekkers trekked at Fraser Hill

The K9 Trekkers http://www.puppy.com.my/k9trekkers/ were at Fraser Hill recently. A group of trekkers travelled up to Fraser Hill on Saturday morning leaving Kuala Lumpur at 9:00am and reached GAP at 11:00am. We travelled along North South Express and exited at Taman Malim and then head south to Kuala Kubu Baru. The road from KKB to GAP is extremely winding and quite tough for some of people as well as their furkids. . The K9 Trekkers reached The Smoke House where all put up a night at Fraser Hill. All the 14 rooms available were all taken by the Trekkers and all really enjoyed the 2 days one night stay. The weather has been extremely good and cooling. On 2nd day at Fraser Hill, we attempt the Jungle Trek with a guide. Some of the pictures taken are as below :-

The Smoke House were kind enough to allow our dogs to stay with us in the resort room. We too are very happy that our team of K9 Trekkers were very discipline and responsible and all our furkids did not contributed any inconvenience to others during our visit.

Lunch and dinner at The Smoke House were enjoying. After our dinner, we proceeded with our AA session with tons of alcohol. Breakfast on 2nd day was similarly fantastic.

(Cedar Rapids – KCRG)—In the rush to get out of the path of Katrina, many people left their pets behind.

So, two Eastern Iowa women decided to do something to help.

It didn’t look good for Percy the dog until Cindy Barnett and Tammie Grimm drove down in a mini-van to rescue him and twelve other dogs.

“I think they got inside this van and felt like it was safe and quiet for the first time. No commotion. They just collapsed and slept,” Barnett said.

It took fourteen hours to drive the dogs from Mississippi back to Tipton.

The women passed the time by giving each dog a name.

“You can’t just get ‘em all out and say, ‘Here, puppy.’ We wanted to make sure they all had a name,” Grimm said.

Lucky escapes final solution

Lucky escapes final solution
NST, 1 Oct 2005

TAIPING, Fri.—- Since 2000, Ooi Ah Leong has “lost” three of his dogs to Taiping municipality’s dog-shooting team.

The animals were shot dead while outside his house in Taman Sungai Mas, near here.

On Sept 15, his four-year-old mongrel, Lucky, almost suffered the same fate when it was shot in the right leg.

True to her name, the injured animal managed to squeeze through a small opening into the compound of its master’s house and escaped her pursuers.

Ooi rushed Lucky, who was about three months pregnant, to an animal clinic where it received treatment for the bullet wound.

Tragedy struck the next day when Lucky’s mate, a black three-year-old mongrel, died at the hands of dog-shooters near the area where Lucky was shot. Several days later, probably due to trauma, Lucky prematurely delivered three still-born puppies.

In all these instances, the animals were properly licensed and wearing the triangular steel tags around their collars.

They were shot for loitering unattended outside the compound and for not wearing a leash. It is an offence under Section 9(2) of the local-by-laws for dogs, including those with licences, to be in public areas without a leash or unaccompanied by their owners.

Ooi said although the municipality was empowered to shoot such animals, it should do so only if the dogs were not wearing tags or were strays.

Meanwhile, a local vet claimed that he has been treating dogs with bullet wounds on an average of one case every month for the past six months.

Dr S.R.Rajan also claimed that the animals shot were not strays but pets.

“These animals were brought in by their grieving owners who claimed that the dog shooters were responsible”, he told the New Straits Times today.

“Owners do admit that their pets were shot as they (dogs) might have strayed into public places on their own without a leash”, Dr Rajan said.

While not refuting the municipality’s right to shoot dogs, he said the shooters must kill the animals with a single clean shot.

Taiping Municipal president Muhammad Padzil Khalid could not be reached for comment.

However, a municipality council, speaking anonymously, said a “dialogue” with the shooters was in order to prevent such incidents.

“I agree that they must be 99.9 per cent sure of a clean shot before squeezing the trigger”, the official said.
